The Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) is essentially a long-term residence permit used to allow eligible family members or related persons to legally reside in Singapore, but it is not equivalent to a work visa that allows direct employment.
In Singapore, whether an LTVP holder can work usually depends on whether the LTVP was issued by the ICA or the MOM, because the work arrangements corresponding to the two types of passes are different.
The two common situations are as follows:
Option 1: If it's an LTVP/LTVP+ issued by ICA, apply for a Letter of Authorization (LOC) before working
If the holder holds an LTVP or LTVP+ issued by the ICA, the employer can usually apply for a Letter of Consent (LOC) from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) after securing a job offer. Once approved, the holder can legally work in Singapore. This arrangement is common for LTVP holders with linked status to Singapore citizens or permanent residents.
If the LTVP holder is accompanying their child to study in Singapore, they are usually not allowed to work during the first year. From the second year onwards, they can apply for a Letter of Consent (LOC) from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) after obtaining a job opportunity.
Option 2: Work after applying for a formal work permit
If the holder is an LTVP issued by MOM, they generally cannot work directly with just an LTVP. Instead, they need to obtain the corresponding work permit, such as an Employment Pass (EP), S Pass, or Work Permit, before they can work in Singapore.
In practice, whether someone can work in Singapore cannot be determined solely by their LTVP status; it also requires a comprehensive assessment of the issuing authority, the holder's background, employment arrangements, and the specific requirements of the MOM.
If you are planning to work, participate in business, or handle work arrangements in Singapore as an LTVP, it is recommended that you conduct an identity and compliance assessment before applying to avoid affecting your onboarding or business arrangements due to inconsistencies in the nature of your work permit.
